The First Dream

III.
The doctor watched as the girl tossed and turned, and that her eyelids randomly flickered. She wasnt having just a dream, she was having a nightmare. He did not disturb her, interested in her reactions.

IV.
Emily alighted on a tree stump, and looked about her.She was currently in a world of her own creation, a dream. She was in a sunny little forest, and she watched with interest the creatures sitting around her, drinking tea.It was a light hearted tea party, and she was enjoying herself immensly.Clockwise about her were the march hare, a turtle, a raccoon, a beaver, a badger, and several squirels, all chattering away excitedly at the same time. They talked of their cozy tree hollows and the best way to go about catching minnows. They were constantly asking her whether she would like a comfit? or whether she wanted another cup of tea?Presently she had accumulated a small feast upon the red-checkered mat, which consisted of: acorns, comfits, quaint bits of bread(buttered, toasted, or jammed), miniature pastries, and several daintly little teacups."Adorable things!"Emily called them, and looked upon the creatures fondly. They were ever so dear to her.

"Queen Emily!"they would call,(for she was their queen), "tell us about life in England!"(only when they pronounced it it sounded like Een-gad!)and she would tell them stories about life in London.(Emily was French, but after the revolution the La val family had moved to London in the hopes of a better life.)Even though Emily thought they were dreadfully boring and liked the dream-land far better, the creatures were always clammmering for more."What are cabbies?"they would ask, or "What exactly is a telephone?"Emily always tried to answer them properly, but she was constantly interupted by more questions, and therefore always managed to confuse the dear things!

Around noon, someone came up with the idea that they should all go blue-bottle( a sort of firefly that emeits blue light) catching, and they all heartily agreed at once, with shouts of "Tally-ho!"and "Brilliant!"And the old badger was elected to lead the lot,as he humbly admitted,"I do eat them for breakfast each morning."and he was dubbed an expert in the matter and therefore it was only natural that he should lead the group. He led them to the heart of the forest, where the trees sometimes whispered to one-another if you listened hard enough.Emily heard snippets of "what are theydoing here?" and "Oh!Its those dreadful squirrels! They take our nuts-!"but Emily never learned what else they had taken, as they were drowned out by the excited cheers of the group. She looked up to see what was causing the comotion, and there in front of them surely enough, was a blue-bottle hive, swarming with thousands, maybe even millions of them!Someone brought out nets, and then before she quite realized what ws happening, she was off and chasing after the queen blue-bottle!

The queen had a deadly stinger on her, and was much faster then all the rest. She darted to and fro, almost daring Emily to catch up.Emily followed it steadfast, until all of a sudden the blue-bottle made a dive between her legs and stung her in the bottom."She groaned, and as the last remnants of her conciousness were still intact heard a loud cry of "Great Scott!Whats happened to queen Emily?"and was dimly aware of the beaver leaning over her, perhaps trying to wake her up...

He walked across the room and knelt beside the bed.He turned his attention to Emily, studying her face intently. She was extremely pale, with grey eyes and long , curly raven black hair.It might have been startlingly pretty, had not been contorted with pain. She gave out a moan and turned, her back facing him.She seemed so frail. He felt pity for the wretched thing. He drew the canopy back, that he might make note of her movements. He turned away from her, and scanned the room; which in itself was bare, desolate, and grim. There were no traces of a happy little girls room, no signs that she had ever been normal."No wonder she hasn't shown improvement, with these beastly medicines and bare room. It's all so depressing!"he muttered to himself. He made a mental note to ask the missus to bring in some sunflowers, to brighten up the drab little room.

He went over to the window and gazed out.It was a chilly February evening, and the grounds of Morehouse Manor were still covered with traces of snow that had yet to melt away. The mansion was old and true to its' name.Nearly everything was timeless and dusty, with cobwebs everywhere. There were holes in the wooden floors and nearly everthing needed fixing. There was plastic slip covers over allmost all of the old furniture, so that when one sat on an armchair or sofa, he slipped right off, causing a cloud of dust to fall from within its' creases. The entire was was cold and depressing, and the weather seemed to match. The sun had not shown for ages, and when it did, there were always curtains covering all the windows, making it perpetual night in Morehouse

He pulled up a dusty old chair beside the bed and studied its inhabitant intently, silently making note of her expressions and movements for the rest of the night.
