Preface, part II

II.

He walked across the room and knelt beside the bed.He turned his attention to Emily, studying her face intently. She was extremely pale, with grey eyes and long , curly raven black hair.It might have been startlingly pretty, had not been contorted with pain. She gave out a moan and turned, her back facing him.She seemed so frail. He felt pity for the wretched thing. He drew the canopy back, that he might make note of her movements. He turned away from her, and scanned the room; which in itself was bare, desolate, and grim. There were no traces of a happy little girls room, no signs that she had ever been normal."No wonder she hasn't shown improvement, with these beastly medicines and bare room. It's all so depressing!"he muttered to himself. He made a mental note to ask the missus to bring in some sunflowers, to brighten up the drab little room.

He went over to the window and gazed out.It was a chilly February evening, and the grounds of Morehouse Manor were still covered with traces of snow that had yet to melt away. The mansion was old and true to its' name.Nearly everything was timeless and dusty, with cobwebs everywhere. There were holes in the wooden floors and nearly everthing needed fixing. There was plastic slip covers over allmost all of the old furniture, so that when one sat on an armchair or sofa, he slipped right off, causing a cloud of dust to fall from within its' creases. The entire was was cold and depressing, and the weather seemed to match. The sun had not shown for ages, and when it did, there were always curtains covering all the windows, making it perpetual night in Morehouse

He pulled up a dusty old chair beside the bed and studied its inhabitant intently, silently making note of her expressions and movements for the rest of the night.
